Description: Burdock is a biennial plant native to Europe and Asia but now widely naturalized around the world. It is easily recognized by its large leaves and spiny burrs that cling to fur and clothing. The plant's root is especially prized in traditional medicine for its detoxifying properties.

Tribal and Herbal Medicine Uses: Burdock has been traditionally used to cleanse the blood, support liver and kidney health, and treat skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. It is also utilized as a digestive tonic, aiding in digestion and reducing bloating. In some cultures, burdock is used as a remedy for sore throats, colds, and urinary tract infections.

Plant Chemicals: Arctiin, inulin, polyacetylenes, tannins, flavonoids, lignans

Biological Activities and Clinical Research: Research highlights burdock's antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, particularly for skin and liver health. Studies suggest its ability to improve blood sugar levels, protect liver cells, and enhance detoxification. Burdock's antimicrobial and diuretic effects have also been observed in clinical and traditional contexts.
