Description: Schisandra chinensis is a deciduous, woody vine native to Northern China, Russia, and Korea. It produces bright red berries that are traditionally used in Chinese medicine. The plant is commonly referred to as "Wu Wei Zi," which translates to "Five-Flavor Fruit," because the berries possess all five basic flavors—sweet, sour, bitter, salty, and pungent. Schisandra is valued for its adaptogenic and tonifying properties, especially for supporting liver function and improving vitality.
Tribal and Herbal Medicine Uses: In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Schisandra is used as a tonic to strengthen the body’s resistance to stress, boost energy, and support liver health. It is also used to treat fatigue, cough, and diarrhea, as well as to enhance mental clarity and physical endurance. It is considered a premier adaptogen, helping the body adapt to stress and restoring balance. Schisandra has been used traditionally to promote longevity and support overall health.
Plant Chemicals: Lignans (schisandrin, schisandrol, gomisin), essential oils, flavonoids, polysaccharides, vitamins C and E
Biological Activities and Clinical Research: Scientific research highlights Schisandra’s role as a powerful adaptogen, helping the body manage stress by modulating the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. It has been shown to protect the liver by improving detoxification and reducing oxidative stress. Schisandra's lignans have demonstrated hepatoprotective and antioxidant effects, as well as neuroprotective and immune-boosting properties. It is also studied for its ability to enhance cognitive function and improve physical endurance.
Current Practical Uses: Schisandra is used to improve liver function, enhance resilience to stress, and boost overall vitality. It is often taken by those recovering from illness, dealing with stress, or looking to improve mental and physical performance. It is available as a supplement in powder, tincture, capsule, or tea form, and is also used in formulas for detoxification and longevity.
